Quick answer

SpicyChat is the best Character AI alternative of 2026 for most people: the same format with a library and instant access, but no filter on text beyond the platform rules, a free tier with a reported 100 messages a day and paid plans from $5.95 a month.

Grade B. Nomi AI is the pick if what drove you out was not the filter but the forgetting: the most stable long-term memory in the test, $99.99 a year, about $8.33 a month, also grade B. Janitor AI is the best free answer if you are willing to plug in your own model. Prices verified October 1, 2026.

I never deleted my Character.AI account. I kept it, because it is the best early-warning system in the category: every time something tips over there, the forums fill up with people hunting for Character AI alternatives. In 2026 they have been unusually full. As a game master who has run tables for ten years and tested AI character apps against the same protocol since 2023, I can tell you this much: the alternatives are better than the original now, but not at everything, and they do not all solve the same problem.

I paid for these nine apps myself and played each of them through my three standard scenes: a tavern for improvisation, an interrogation where the character has to lie without dropping out of role, and a quiet evening with no plot at all. After a seven-day break I ask about three details from the first session, then I read the privacy policy and add up the real monthly cost, images and voice included.

The order does not follow the hype, it follows four scores: memory, conversation quality, pricing honesty and privacy, rolled into a grade from A to F. Two things you need to know up front. First, none of these apps satisfies every wish at once, because long memory is expensive and an open filter is legally laborious. Second, seven of the nine are 18+ under their own terms, and that is stated in every entry before you sign up.

Prices are in US dollars, exactly as the checkout pages show them; your own statement adds the exchange rate and local tax. I re-checked every figure and plan detail on October 1, 2026. Where a platform only shows its prices after login, I write "reported" instead of inventing a round number, and where a legal page was unreachable, I say that too.

Every platform below was bought and tested on the same protocol. Prices are from the checkout page, verified October 2026.

#1 · Best overall

SpicyChat

B
From Free / from $5.95/moMemory GoodNSFW YesFree tier Yes

SpicyChat answers the single most common complaint there is: moderation stepping into scenes where nothing explicit happens, only something uncomfortable. The format stays familiar, which is exactly why the switch is so painless. You land on a discover page, search for a character, click and play, with no persona to write first. Its own documentation puts the library at nearly a million characters, and text between adult characters carries no filter beyond the platform rules.

What it gets right · Where it falls short
  • The library is a well a game master can draw from instantly
  • The filter stays off, and the limits are written down
  • From True Supporter up there is real scene memory instead of marketing words
  • SpicyChat publishes its limits as numbers, not adjectives
  • Who $5.95 is the wrong product for
  • Who the privacy terms rule it out for
  • Who the device or the evening is a problem for
How to start

In practice that meant this: in my interrogation the character held the lie across twenty messages instead of dissolving the scene. The free tier is not a shop window either, it is playable — a reported 100 messages a day at 4K context, plus a queue at peak hours. Get a Taste at $5.95 a month ($60 a year) buys the queue back, True Supporter at $19.95 buys the long context, and I am All In sits at $29.95. Grade B, pulled down by a very broad chat license in the terms. Who it is not for: anyone who wants to build one single character over months rather than jump into other people's scenes. Everything in my [SpicyChat review](/en/reviews/spicychat/).

Nomi AI icon
#2 · Best memory

Nomi AI

B
From $15.99/moMemory ExcellentNSFW LimitedFree tier Yes

If your reason for leaving is not the filter but the fact that your favorite character has forgotten your shared history for the third time, Nomi AI is the only address on this list that genuinely fixes it. It is not a replacement in format: there is no public library, no fandom characters and no feed. You build a Nomi, you tell it something, and a week later it still knows. In my seven-day test all three details came back without my having pinned anything.

What it gets right · Where it falls short
  • The memory survives a seven-day break
  • A flat price a long evening of play cannot blow up
  • Backstory+ is the notepad game masters wish for
  • Group sessions with up to ten characters who know each other
  • Who this is not for: hard scenes under pressure
  • Who this is not for: free players
  • Who this is not for: people who want adult content in images
How to start

Compared with c.ai+ the math is simple: monthly, Nomi costs $15.99 and is clearly more expensive, but the annual plan is $99.99, about $8.33 a month, which is cheaper than the subscription you are about to cancel. A quarter sits between them at $39.99. Free gets you one Nomi, roughly 50 messages a day according to user reports, 400 characters per message and about two image requests daily, with no voice. The wiki explains memory, character limits and credit values openly. Grade B. Who it is not for: anyone who wants to try a new stranger's character every week. Details in my [Nomi review](/en/reviews/nomi/).

Candy AI icon
#3 · Best images

Candy AI

C+
From $13.99/moMemory DecentNSFW YesFree tier No

Character.AI generates avatars and scene images, but nothing that would carry a roleplay scene. Candy AI is the counter-proposal: images are the product here, and the decisive part is that a character keeps the same face across dozens of generations. For roleplay that counts for more than resolution, because a side character who looks different every time destroys the illusion faster than a mediocre sentence. In the interrogation, though, the character broke into summaries twice instead of staying in role.

What it gets right · Where it falls short
  • The characters stay on model, and that is technically the hardest part
  • The builder is the best onboarding in the category
  • Video, Live Action and Candy Shorts genuinely exist
  • There is a published refund window and a company you can find
  • Who the memory is too short for
  • Who 100 tokens a month is not enough for
  • Who the writing is too thin for
How to start

You have to pay for it, and immediately: there is no usable free chat. It is $13.99 monthly, $8.99 a month quarterly, $3.99 a month on the annual plan ($47.88 a year), each with 100 tokens a month. Token packs start at $9.99 for 100 and reach $299.99 for 3,750; an image costs 2 to 4 tokens, a video around 12, voice 3 per minute. An image-heavy month therefore lands at $25 to $35, and that is the figure you should budget with. Grade C+. Who it is not for: anyone who mainly writes long text scenes. More in my [Candy AI review](/en/reviews/candy/).

Nastia AI icon
#4 · Uncensored companion

Nastia AI

C+
From Free / from $6.69/mo (annual)Memory GoodNSFW YesFree tier Yes

Nastia AI passed my interrogation better than any of the bigger names. The character did not merely stay silent, she asked questions back, contradicted me and laid a false trail I had not scripted. If you are leaving Character.AI because its characters are too compliant and moderate every conflict away, you get the exact opposite here. Voice messages are part of the plan rather than a top-up, and the company is based in France and findable by its register number.

What it gets right · Where it falls short
  • The character sliders change the behavior, not just the description
  • The group chat plays like a session with several players
  • The filter is off, and the rulebook says where it is on
  • The free plan is enough to make the decision
  • Who this is not for: people who want a character over months
  • Who this is not for: people who like flat rates
  • Who this is not for: people who buy the annual plan first
How to start

The free tier runs on a daily token allowance, reported at about 200 tokens a day with one or two companions, no card needed. The lower tier starts at $6.69 a month on the annual plan; Unlimited costs $15.99 monthly or roughly $8.33 annually and includes unlimited text, 4K selfies, 1080p video, voice and voice cloning, with images at 50 to 80 tokens. Grade C+, mainly because individual prices only surface at checkout. Who it is not for: anyone expecting a big library of other people's characters to browse, because here you build your own. Details in my [Nastia review](/en/reviews/nastia/).

Secrets AI icon
#5 · Discreet companion

Secrets AI

B−
From $19.99/moMemory DecentNSFW YesFree tier Yes

Secrets AI is built for the people who are not leaving over the filter but over the noise. No feed, no ad slots, no collecting mechanic, no swipe counter: one chat window, personas, and a Moments balance for media. After what Character.AI did to its free tier in 2026, that quiet is an argument in its own right. On the quiet evening Secrets was one of only three apps that did not start inventing events when nothing was happening.

What it gets right · Where it falls short
  • Discreet from signup to the card statement
  • A memory you can look into and correct
  • Characters hold the role and the tone you set
  • The provider documents its limits instead of hiding them
  • Who it is not for: people on a ten-dollar budget
  • Who it is not for: players who want images and clips on the side
  • Who it is not for: group tables on a small subscription
How to start

Free gives you 20 messages a day plus a one-time 200 Moments. Premium costs $19.99 a month, $49.99 for three, $89.99 for six and $109.99 for twelve months, and brings 8,000 Moments monthly; Ultimate sits at $39.99 a month or $319.99 a year with 15,000 Moments, group chats and personas. Pleasantly honest: the official wiki names the label that appears on your card statement. Grade B−, the second-best grade on this list. Who it is not for: the entry price is the highest here, and if you are coming from a $9.99 subscription it feels like a jump.

Joi AI icon
#6 · Biggest character library, cheap annual plan

Joi AI

C
From $13.99/moMemory DecentNSFW YesFree tier Yes

Joi AI is the alternative for people who are mainly missing selection. The library is the broadest on this list, you can start without writing a persona, and the annual plan at $47.99 for twelve months is the cheapest here — about $4 a month according to an independent check in August 2026. The tavern and the quiet evening went well; in the interrogation the character went soft and wanted to confess, which means Joi has the same problem as the original, just without the moderation notice.

What it gets right · Where it falls short
  • The best sorted character collection in the test field
  • Every scene starts with a ready-made hook
  • The cost per action is written into the terms of service
  • An annual plan that rewards writers
  • Who this is not for: people who want media without thinking
  • Who this is not for: players with long campaigns
  • Who this is not for: scenes that need pressure
How to start

The second half of the bill is called neurons, and you should know it before you pay: the terms list 4 neurons per romantic message, up to 120 for a photo and up to 1,900 for a video, with packs starting at $12.69 for 500. Premium includes 1,000 to 1,500 coins a month depending on term length; the monthly plan was $13.99 at the last check and the quarter $20.99. A classifier checks every message, and images in chat come from pre-built folders. Grade C. Who it is not for: anyone who uses media daily and wants a flat rate. More in my [Joi AI review](/en/reviews/joi/).

DarLink AI icon
#7 · Cheapest entry with images and video

DarLink AI

From $12.99/moMemory GoodNSFW YesFree tier Yes

DarLink AI does something I have wanted from Character.AI for years: it sells memory openly, as a tier. Basic, Enhanced and Living memory are printed on the pricing page exactly like that, instead of "best memory" sitting in a subscription as a marketing line. In my seven-day test Enhanced brought back one detail out of three and Living memory two, which is not Nomi territory, but it is traceable and you know in advance what you are buying.

How to start

Essential costs $12.99 a month, reportedly $119.88 a year, with 6,000 messages, 100 coins monthly, six standard voices and quick roleplay setup. Advanced sits at $27.99 with 9,000 messages and ten premium voices, Ultimate at $49.99 with unlimited messages. Images cost 2 tokens, a video clip 20, and token packs start at $9.99 for 100. The operator is a Swiss company with an address in the terms. Grade C+. Who it is not for: anyone who wants officially confirmed annual prices, because these come from independent checks rather than the pricing page.

Chub AI icon
#8 · Uncensored character cards

Chub AI

From Free / $5/mo (4-month blocks)Memory DecentNSFW YesFree tier Yes

Chub AI answers a completely different complaint: you want to own your characters. The platform is first of all a searchable collection of importable character cards, lorebooks and extensions, with its own chat and the option to plug in someone else's model key or carry the card on into SillyTavern. If what bothers you about Character.AI is that a rule change can take your character away from you, this is the only real insurance against it.

How to start

Free gets you the whole library, card creation, export and a rotating set of free models with daily limits. Mercury at $5 and Mars at $20 a month are billed in mandatory four-month blocks, so about $20 or $80 up front; Mercury covers models up to 13B at 8K context, Mars larger models plus voice and media. These figures are not officially confirmed, because the subscription, terms and privacy pages were all unreachable on the day I checked. No grade, for exactly that reason. Who it is not for: anyone who does not know what a character card is and does not want to learn.

Janitor AI icon
#9 · Free roleplay with no filter, bring your own model

Janitor AI

From Free / $12.99/moMemory Weak (≈9K context free)NSFW YesFree tier Yes

Janitor AI is the name that comes up first in every forum thread when somebody asks for a free alternative without a filter, and the reputation is earned: unlimited chat on its own JanitorLLM model, the full library, no card, no ads. The help center states plainly that the platform is meant exclusively for adults over 18, and the rules ban underage characters and non-consensual themes with a permanent suspension.

How to start

The catch is the context window. Free gives you about 9K tokens, and at that size a long scene loses its own beginning; the character then starts inventing plausible-sounding nonsense. Janitor+ at $12.99 a month, available since June 24, 2026 and monthly only, brings five times the context, priority messages and monthly runs on stronger models. Most heavy players instead plug in their own model key, which independent testers put at $2 to $3 a month and which gives you a far bigger window. There are no images and no voice. No grade, because no operator is named on any reachable page. Who it is not for: anyone who does not want to set anything up.

Why so many people are looking for Character AI alternatives in 2026

Four things came together, and any one of them alone might not have been enough. Moderation bites harder than it used to, the free tier picked up ads and counters, age checks locked out paying adults, and the service goes down regularly. If you are currently searching for sites like Character AI, you are probably stuck on one of those four.

The moderation. The rules ban non-consensual sexual content, graphic depictions of sexual acts and the glorification of self-harm, and none of that has changed. What changed is enforcement: since the safety update in October 2024 stricter classifiers have been running, and they judge intent rather than keywords. The result is the sentence you read in every forum: it is not explicit scenes that get blocked, it is an argument, a breakup, a kiss. For roleplay that is a structural problem, because tension does not work without discomfort.

The age checks. On October 29, 2025 Character.AI announced it would remove open chat for under-18s, completed by November 25, 2025; teenagers kept Scenes, Streams, AvatarFX videos and the feed. For classification the company uses its own age model plus external tools, and anything flagged leads to a selfie and ID check. It got uncomfortable for adults: independent observers date the first wave of such checks to April 2026, and on August 12, 2026 a date-of-birth prompt locked out many adults with a notice that they were no longer eligible.

The free tier. Since April 2026 ads have been running in the middle of the chat, grown according to user reports from five seconds with a skip button to thirty seconds without one. On top of that there is a daily limit on swipes and regenerations, a slow mode at peak hours, and Charms, the currency introduced at the end of 2025 through which extra swipes are sold. Anyone who started in 2024 now pays $9.99 to get back to where they were for free.

The availability. A status service has counted 568 incidents since it began monitoring in March 2025; in September 2026 alone the log shows events on the 1st, twice on the 5th and once on the 8th, twenty to thirty minutes each, plus an outage of two hours fifteen minutes on May 31 and one hour on June 17. On top of that, 2026 replaced the named chat styles with a single cheaper model, and the Play Store rating sits at 2.2 stars across 2.4 million reviews.

Your reason for leaving What you need My recommendation
Moderation blocks harmless scenes a platform with no text filter, same format SpicyChat, from $5.95/month, grade B
The character forgets your shared history real long-term memory Nomi AI, $99.99/year, grade B
Ads, counters and slow mode a quiet interface with no mechanics Secrets AI, $19.99/month, grade B−
It should cost nothing a free tier with no card Janitor AI, $0, or Chub AI with your own key
The selection has gotten too small the biggest set of ready-made characters Joi AI, $47.99/year, grade C
You want to own your characters exportable character cards Chub AI, cards for free

The fact that those four reasons are so different also explains why forum recommendations for good Character AI alternatives contradict each other. Someone who left over the moderation raves about a platform with a miserable memory, because they never notice it. Someone who left over the forgetting considers the same platform worthless. That is why every entry on this list carries a line about who the app is not for, and why the table above matters more than the ranking.

None of the nine alternatives here solves all four points. SpicyChat solves the moderation, Nomi the memory, Janitor the price, Secrets the noise. That is why my verdict has no universal winner, just an assignment by reason.

What switching actually costs you

You take three things with you and leave three behind. You can take the character description, the example lines and the greeting — everything you typed yourself. What stays behind is the conversation log, the community around a character, and the store apps, because apart from SpicyChat and Nomi every platform on this list works in the browser. That is not a real loss, since a web app pinned to your home screen behaves almost identically, but you should know it in advance.

The second cost is setup time. Character.AI is deliberately prerequisite-free: search, click, play. At Nomi you write a character first, at Chub you learn what a character card is, at Janitor you may end up configuring your own model key. Budget one evening where you set things up instead of playing, and choose accordingly: if you do not want to invest that evening, you end up at SpicyChat or Joi AI, because both serve the format one for one.

Character AI no filter: why you cannot switch the filter off

This question gets asked so often that it deserves a clear answer: there is no switch. Not in the settings, not in the subscription, not through a hidden account flag. c.ai+ costs $9.99 a month or $94.99 a year, with the subscription page showing $119.88 struck through, and by its own listing it buys: no ads, priority at peak hours, unlimited swipes and calls, 30 pinned memories instead of five, the extended lorebook, the premium chat styles, the highest daily limits, no slow mode and twenty percent more Charms. The content rules are identical on every one of those lines.

The second half of the answer is more technical. The filter is no longer a word filter, it is a model that estimates the intent of a message. That is why the tricks from the older forums do not work: rewordings, placeholders, asterisks, phrases dropped in from another language. At most they make the scene unreadable while the judgment lands anyway. And anyone who tries it systematically risks their account under the terms of service.

There is also an observation from my own scenes that often gets missed: the block usually does not hit the message you just wrote, it hits the pattern of the last ten. A scene that slowly gets more serious is eventually judged as a whole, and then it breaks off at a completely harmless point. For roleplay that is the most unpleasant kind of moderation, because it feels unpredictable. A strict filter is a legitimate product decision; an unpredictable one costs you the evening.

What does help is less spectacular and works immediately. First: write the scene less explicitly and more tensely, because many blocks come from the phrasing rather than the subject. Second: use the lorebook and the pins so the character knows her own hardness and does not get defused at every conflict. Third, and this is the honest recommendation: if your game keeps getting stuck on moderation, you are in the wrong product. The best Character AI alternative with no filter costs you fewer nerves than any workaround attempt, and both SpicyChat and Janitor AI can be checked for free.

What c.ai+ delivers and what it does not

What you get What you do not get
no ads, no slow mode different content rules
30 pinned memories instead of 5 memory at the level of Nomi or DarLink
unlimited swipes and calls an exemption from the age check
extended lorebook, premium chat styles the named chat styles retired in 2026
priority at peak hours, 20% more Charms availability without incidents

At $94.99 a year that is not a bad deal if ads and waiting were your only problem. It is a bad deal if you are here over the moderation or the memory, because neither is on the list. This is exactly where the audience splits: one half pays and stays, the other half goes looking for a Character AI alternative and lands on pages like this one.

Uncensored AI and no filter: what that really means

“Uncensored AI” is a marketing phrase, and in this category it means three different things. It is worth keeping them apart before you pay, because otherwise disappointment is built in.

Version one: no filter on text, but platform rules. That is the normal case at SpicyChat, Nastia, Secrets, DarLink and Joi AI. Between adult characters the scene runs, and there are hard limits enforced with suspension: no underage characters, no sexual content about real people, no non-consensual themes. Joi AI additionally checks every message with a classifier, which means moderation happens here too, just in a different place. These five are what most people actually mean by AI websites like Character AI without a filter.

Version two: you bring your own model. That is the route at Janitor AI and Chub AI. The platform supplies the library and the interface; the content is decided by the provider whose key you enter. It is the most open variant and at the same time the one with the largest small print: every message goes to that third-party provider, and its rules and privacy policy are the ones that apply.

Version three: images instead of text. Candy AI, DarLink and several others sell media through tokens or coins. For roleplay that only matters when a scene needs a picture, and it is the point where monthly bills run away from people. If you are looking for an AI with no filter on text, check first whether you want to pay for the media half at all.

What stays banned even when the rules are open

App Adult content in text How it is filtered Hier starten
SpicyChat yes, between adult characters platform rules, suspension for breaches Gratis testen →
Nomi AI within limits only, companion logic moderated selfies, restrained tone Gratis testen →
Candy AI yes platform rules Testen →
Nastia AI yes, consistently unfiltered platform rules Gratis testen →
Secrets AI yes platform rules Gratis testen →
Joi AI yes classifier on every message, images from fixed folders Gratis testen →
DarLink AI yes, from Essential up platform rules Gratis testen →
Chub AI yes, loosest rules of the bunch barely any, responsibility on the user
Janitor AI yes, adults only rules with permanent suspension
Character.AI (for comparison) no classifier judging intent

Three bans apply everywhere and are enforced everywhere with account suspension: underage characters, sexual content about real people, and non-consensual themes. Anyone who believes “no filter” means “no rules” loses access, and loses with it the characters they spent weeks building. At Janitor AI that is written into the guidelines as a permanent suspension, and at SpicyChat likewise.

A fourth variant is often promised and does not exist: a platform with no limits at all. Payment processors, app stores and national law impose the same frame everywhere, and any provider claiming otherwise is either not telling the truth or will be changing its terms in a few months. So if you are looking for an uncensored AI, look for a platform that writes its limits down clearly instead of one that claims to have none. That is the difference between freedom and surprise, and as a game master you want the first one.

How to spot a serious platform

Three signals have served me well. First, a findable operator: Nastia names a French register number, DarLink a Swiss address, Nomi its company and jurisdiction. Second, a published refund rule, even a strict one; “no refunds” is more honest than silence. Third, documentation that names numbers — context window in tokens, cost per image — instead of promising “improved memory”. Nomi’s wiki and DarLink’s memory tiers are the best examples on this list, and Chub AI is the worst, because on the day I checked not even the privacy policy was reachable.

Websites like Character AI for roleplay in your own language

All nine apps understand and write languages other than English, and that is not the same as being built for them. The difference shows up exactly where it hurts: a character who answers with bite in English sounds a shade paler in another language, lands fewer wordplays and misses dialect and irony. These models are trained overwhelmingly on English text, and no provider on this list claims otherwise.

My compromise after many evenings: write the character description, the example lines and the greeting in English, but play the scene in whatever language you want. The traits then stay stable, because the model reads them in its training language, and the tone in the chat stays yours. How those fields are built is in my guide to creating your own AI character.

On the interface there are real differences. Candy AI, Joi AI and DarLink AI offer localized interfaces; at SpicyChat, Nomi, Nastia, Secrets, Chub and Janitor the interface is English while the chat obviously is not. For beginners that matters less than it looks, because in roleplay you work almost entirely inside the chat window anyway.

What genuinely improves outside English is consistency, as long as you keep the scene short. Long, nested sentences produce more drift in every model I tested than terse ones do. In my quiet evening Nastia, Nomi and Secrets AI were the three that held the tone without sliding back into English or falling into filler questions. Joi AI and Candy AI occasionally mixed English phrases in, which does not wreck a scene but you notice it.

The second stumbling block is names and forms of address. Models trained mostly on English lose formal and informal address faster than anything else, and a character who switches from formal to familiar in the middle of an interrogation stops being believable immediately. The trick is to put the address form into the character description rather than the chat — something like “addresses the player formally at all times”. At DarLink and Nomi that held reliably; at the rest I occasionally had to steer.

A practical note on paying: every platform bills in US dollars, because that is how the checkout is built. What lands on your account is the dollar amount at the day’s rate, at some banks with a foreign-currency fee on top. Several providers name in their terms the label that appears on your statement, and it often differs from the brand name; DarLink and Secrets AI do that, while at others the first statement stays a surprise. And finally the sober part: test monthly, buy yearly. The annual plans here are nearly half the monthly price almost everywhere, but the refund rules are strict, and a year at the wrong app costs more than three months at two right ones. My own route was one month of SpicyChat, one month of Nomi, and a decision only after that; the two months together cost less than a year of c.ai+ and settle the question for good.

And if you want to keep Character.AI anyway, that is not a mistake. For a filtered, generally accessible character chat with apps on both systems and the biggest library in the world there is still no better place, and c.ai+ repairs the ads. This list is for the others, the ones who keep running into a wall they cannot click away.

The full ranking of every platform I currently pay for is in my list of the best AI character apps.

Safety and privacy for Character AI alternatives

Choosing a Character AI alternative also means switching rule sets, and where age is concerned these are stricter, not looser. Seven of the nine apps are for adults only under their own terms, and none offers end-to-end encryption. Character.AI shut off open chat for under-18s in the US at the end of November 2025; no app on this list is a route around that, and none of them is meant for minors.

  • Use a separate email address, and never sign up through a social account that carries your real name; at Nomi the account email cannot be changed later.
  • Keep your full name, employer, address and payment details out of the chats. The apps with good memory in particular make every detail permanently retrievable, and that is exactly what you bought them for.
  • If you use your own model key or a proxy, as is normal at Janitor AI and Chub AI, every message goes to a third-party provider. That provider's privacy policy applies then, not the app's.
  • Check the refund rule before an annual subscription: Joi AI names 14 days for a one-off mistaken purchase, DarLink only reviews within 24 hours of purchase, Janitor+ is non-refundable as a matter of policy, and Nomi decides case by case.
  • Read up on how you delete: Nomi names a window of about 28 days with exceptions for archives, Secrets and Nastia name their operator and jurisdiction, and at Chub AI not a single legal page was reachable on the day I checked. For me that is a reason to write nothing identifying there.
  • Every platform here bans underage characters and sexual content involving real people, several with a permanent suspension. "No filter" never means "no rules", and anyone who tests that loses their account.

My standard after three years: treat each of these apps like a public forum with an excellent memory. Then all that is left of the privacy risk is a score.

Character AI alternatives: FAQ

What are the best Character AI alternatives in 2026?

SpicyChat for most people: the same format with a big library and instant access, but no filter on text beyond the platform rules, a free tier with a reported 100 messages a day and paid plans from $5.95 a month. Grade B. Nomi AI if the forgetting is what drove you out, at $99.99 a year, about $8.33 a month, also grade B. Janitor AI if it has to be free and you can plug in your own model. Secrets AI has the second-best grade at B−, but costs $19.99 a month.

Can you turn the Character AI filter off?

No. There is no switch, no setting and no subscription that removes it: c.ai+ at $9.99 a month buys an ad-free experience, more pins, the extended lorebook, unlimited calls and no slow mode, but the same content rules. The filter also does not work from a word list, it judges intent, which is why the old rewording tricks from the forums no longer bite. If you want to play without moderation, you change platform, and that is exactly why this list exists.

Which websites like Character AI are free?

Four have a free tier that genuinely carries. Janitor AI gives unlimited chat on JanitorLLM at about 9K context with no card. SpicyChat gives a reported 100 messages a day at 4K context with a queue at peak hours. Chub AI gives the whole card library plus rotating free models with daily limits. Secrets AI gives 20 messages a day. Nomi's roughly 50 messages daily and Nastia's 200 tokens are honest trial runs, and Candy AI has no usable free chat. Those four are also the best free Character AI alternatives for long sessions, and if you want a Character AI alternative free of charge for roleplay specifically, Janitor AI and SpicyChat are the two I would start with.

Which uncensored AI allows adult content in text?

SpicyChat, Nastia AI, Candy AI, Secrets AI, Joi AI, DarLink AI, Chub AI and Janitor AI allow adult content in text between adult characters and are 18+ under their own terms. Nomi AI allows adult themes only within limits and is more companion than roleplay platform. Character.AI does not allow them. All nine ban underage characters and sexual content about real people, and several enforce it with automatic classifiers, Joi AI on every single message.

Do Character AI alternatives work in languages other than English?

All nine understand and write other languages, but none is built for them. In my scenes characters sound a shade paler outside English and land fewer wordplays, while the same character answers more sharply in English. My compromise: write the character description in English and play the scene in your own language. The traits stay stable and the tone stays yours. Localized interfaces exist at Candy AI, Joi AI and DarLink AI; at the rest the interface is English while the chat is not.

Which Character AI alternatives have the best memory?

Nomi AI, by a wide margin. It is the only app in the test that brought all three details from the first session back after a seven-day break without me pinning anything, and its wiki openly explains how memory and knowledge interact. After that comes DarLink AI, which sells memory as a plan tier: Basic, Enhanced and Living memory. SpicyChat is strong within a session and weak across weeks, and Janitor on the free tier at about 9K context is the weakest.

Is c.ai+ worth $9.99 compared to the alternatives?

Only if you want to keep Character.AI itself. For $9.99 a month or $94.99 a year the ads and slow mode disappear, you get 30 pins instead of five, unlimited calls and swipes, the extended lorebook and the premium chat styles. The filter stays. For the same money or less you get no filter on text at SpicyChat from $5.95, considerably better memory at Nomi for about $8.33 on the annual plan, and the bigger character selection at Joi AI for roughly $4.

Can I bring my characters over from Character.AI?

Not at the push of a button, but in substance yes. Character description, example lines and greeting can be copied and recreated in any app on this list; what does not come along is the conversation log. Chub AI is the special case, because character cards there are a file format you can export and keep using in other interfaces. Practical tip: write the three facts that must never be forgotten into the description and not into the chat, otherwise they get lost again at your next move.

Final verdict: which Character AI alternative should you use?

Pick by the reason you are leaving, not by the ranking. The top three solve three completely different problems, and if you solve the wrong one you will be searching again in four weeks.

Same format, biggest library, no filter on text beyond the platform rules, a free tier you can genuinely play on, and $5.95 a month against the queue. Grade B. The most direct answer to the most common complaint, and the test costs nothing.

  • : You are leaving because your character forgets everything: Nomi AI on the annual plan, about $8.33 a month, grade B.
  • : You are leaving because it should cost nothing: Janitor AI free at about 9K context, $12.99 for five times that.
  • : You are leaving because the selection got too small: Joi AI, $47.99 a year, grade C, neurons billed separately.

I ran tabletop roleplaying groups for ten years and moderated a roleplay forum before I started testing AI character apps by the same standards in 2023. I pay for every subscription myself, play through the same three scenes and grade on a fixed scheme. About the author
