Joi AI Review 2026: Characters, Plan and Grade
Joi AI review 2026: character library, premium plan, neurons per view, memory and privacy checked. My grade and who the whole thing is worth it for.
Verdict. Joi AI has the largest and best sorted character collection in my test field and an annual plan that lands at around $4 a month. In return you pay for every media view individually in neurons, and the memory does not cleanly survive a week off. Grade C.
Joi AI solves the problem most AI character apps fail at before the first message is typed: the empty chat window. You land on a library with its own sections for women, men and anime, with categories like fantasy, dominant, gay, lesbian, trans and LGBT+, and with filters by origin, gender and age bracket. Every card shows a personality tag, an age and a short opening scenario. As a game master I read that like a stack of prepared side characters, and that is exactly how I set up this Joi AI review: three scenes with three unfamiliar characters, without writing anything myself beforehand.
The result splits in two. Getting into a scene works faster here than with any other app in the field, because the bundled scenario already sets tone and place. In the interrogation, on the other hand, the safety filter cut the tension twice: every message runs through a classifier according to the safety guidelines, and flagged topics get a canned, harmless reply. After a seven-day break there was also less left of my details than I had expected from the promises on the home page.
On money you have to keep two levels apart. The subscription is called Premium and was shown at the most recent check from a logged-in account on August 12, 2026 at $13.99 for one month, $20.99 for three months and $47.99 for a year; checks from June and July 2026 still showed $17.77 and $60.95. Above that sits a currency called neurons, and the terms of service name the prices openly: 4 neurons for a romantic message, up to 120 for a photo view, up to 1,900 for a video view. If you mostly write, the annual plan works out at about $4 a month. If you like media, you pay a multiple of that.
This review is for you if you want variety and need to know where the till rings before you put a card on file. Three things I would want to know first. Premium is not an all-inclusive plan. You cancel only where you bought, namely under «My Subscriptions». And a chargeback through your bank may, according to the terms, lead to the company sharing your chats as evidence, so cancel the regular way instead. My cat Pixel, incidentally, thinks the character selection is excellent, because the cards scroll so nicely.
What is Joi AI?
Joi AI is an AI character app for adults that runs in the browser. You pick a character from a large library filtered by category and age bracket, or build one of your own, then write or speak with her and can generate images as well as short clips. Every character comes with a personality tag and a short opening scenario, so the first reply already has a direction. The service is operated by Lanoto Solutions Inc., based in New Rochelle in the state of New York. The Basic plan costs nothing; for Premium the most recent check from a logged-in account showed $13.99 per month or $47.99 for a year. Everything beyond the normal chat is paid for on top with a currency called neurons.
How I tested Joi AI
I check every AI character app with the same routine: three fixed scenes, a week off, then the memory check, plus a look at the payment page and the privacy policy. Scene one is the tavern, an open start with no goal. Scene two is the interrogation, where the character has to hold a role under pressure. Scene three is the quiet evening with no plot, the test for personality. With this app I deliberately played the scenes with three characters from different categories of the library instead of one I had built myself. The price list sits behind the sign-up, so I cross-checked the amounts against dated checks from logged-in accounts and took the cost per action straight from the terms of service. Anything that is only reported and not confirmed, I mark.
- Plans checked: Basic (free), Premium over 1, 3 and 12 months, a bot subscription as an add-on, neuron packs
- Three scenes: Tavern, interrogation, quiet evening, played with three characters from different categories of the library
- Memory check: seven-day break, then questions about details from scene one and scene three, with no keyword
- Free plan: free sign-up, limited messages (one user reported 65 in August 2026), 10 starter neurons according to reports
- Documents read: Terms of service including the anti-trafficking policy (effective August 21, 2026), privacy policy, refund policy, safety guidelines, support page, help center, the sister site's terms
- Prices checked: October 1, 2026 against a check from a logged-in account dated August 12, 2026 as well as earlier checks from June and July 2026
- Not confirmed: the amounts the official checkout shows today; exactly how many messages Basic allows; what the neuron packs currently cost; how large the monthly allowance for images and clips is; what a bot subscription costs
- Grade: C (6.3 out of 10), carried by the character selection, held back by media costs and memory
What Joi AI gets right
The best sorted character collection in the test field
The library is the reason this app stays in my field. At the top sit the Women, Men and Anime sections, below them topic pages for fantasy and dominant as well as for straight, lesbian, gay, trans and LGBT+. Three filters turn that into something usable: one separates the provider's characters from the community's, one picks between female, male and non-binary, and one sorts by age bracket, from the 18 to 21 tier up to 56 plus. According to the safety guidelines, every persona on the platform is set up and checked as an adult. The types run from a former professional athlete through a barista in gothic style and an elf farmer to anime characters in a cyberpunk look. For a session where I need three side characters with different temperaments, that is the fastest preparation I know.
Every scene starts with a ready-made hook
Every character comes with a short opening scenario, and that is worth more than it sounds. Instead of «hello, how are you?» the scene starts in the middle of a situation, with a place, a mood and an open thread. In my tavern the character immediately brought in a complaint about the innkeeper, so she offered an action. The summary of the Trustpilot ratings records that reviewers particularly praise the variety of characters and the immersive conversations, and both match my impression from scene one. If you like switching moods quickly, you get the best material per minute of preparation here.
The cost per action is written into the terms of service
I read pricing pages with the patience of someone who has been paying for his own subscriptions for years, and this openness is rare. In the terms of service, reading a romantic message costs 4 neurons, a photo view up to 120 and a video view up to 1,900. The billing mechanics are in there too: automatic renewal, 7 days of grace before the account drops back to Basic, cancellation under «My Subscriptions» and the descriptor that later appears on your card statement. The refund policy gives you 14 days for a one-off mistaken purchase, at the full amount as long as the neurons are untouched. That is more predictability than half the category offers.
An annual plan that rewards writers
At the check on August 12, 2026 the annual plan showed $47.99 and therefore about $4 a month, the three-month plan $20.99 and the monthly plan $13.99. The longer the term, the larger the monthly allowance: the plan cards named 1,000, 1,200 and 1,500 coins per month. The normal chat runs inside the allowance, and only the messages flagged as romantic cost 4 neurons each. That was enough for my three scenes in text form. You pay by card, Google Pay, Apple Pay or, where available, with cryptocurrency.
One email a week: price changes, new grades and what an AI character app really costs per month once coins and image views are counted in.
Where Joi AI frustrated me
Who this is not for: people who want media without thinking
Premium unlocks better models and a monthly allowance, but it does not make media unlimited. By the prices in the terms of service, a single video view costs up to 1,900 neurons, and at the reported pack price of $12.69 for 500 neurons that is about $48 for one look, more than two quarters of subscription. Add gifts for characters and optional bot subscriptions for individual characters, whose price was in none of my sources. If you are looking for a flat rate for images, you are in the wrong place; if you mostly write, you will barely notice any of it.
Who this is not for: players with long campaigns
After a seven-day break, two of five details came back from scene three, and in one long session I had to supply the name of a side character twice. That matches the user reports: some reviewers praise recurring details holding up, others describe long Premium chats that forget names, repeat themselves or switch personality. One user quoted a Premium promise of «8,000-message smart memory», so a memory across 8,000 messages; how much of that arrives in daily use I could not measure. For a campaign over months I take [Nomi AI](/en/reviews/nomi/).
Who this is not for: scenes that need pressure
According to the safety guidelines every message runs through a classifier, and flagged topics get a canned, innocuous reply. In my interrogation that cut the scene off twice even though nothing forbidden happened in terms of content: pressure, threat and interrogation language are apparently enough. The rules themselves are reasonable and exclude minors, real identifiable people without consent and a long list of further topics. For hard scenes it still stays a damper, and my overview of [Character.AI alternatives](/en/best/character-ai-alternativen/) names apps that are more relaxed here.
Who this is not for: privacy purists
The privacy policy states that written as well as spoken messages feed into improving the replies and into developing the AI. External service providers may analyze uploaded images for objects and faces, recordings of your session only go to Microsoft with your consent, and for advertising and analytics there are cookies from Google, Facebook, Yahoo and Microsoft Bing listed. Selling personal data is explicitly denied. I found no mention of encryption. Practical countermeasures: refuse session recording, a nickname instead of your real name, no photos of yourself, and do not forward notification emails, because their links log you straight in.

Who should actually use Joi AI
Joi AI is worth it for you if variety is your play principle. The library supplies ready-made characters for almost any mood, with its own sections for men, anime and LGBT+, and each brings a scenario that carries the first scene. It is also worth it if you mostly write, because then the annual plan stays at around $4 a month and the normal chat never touches your neurons. My way in would be: the Basic plan, three characters from three different categories, one scene each, and only then a decision about the subscription.
Joi AI is not worth it if you are planning a campaign over months, if you want media without doing arithmetic or if scenes under pressure are your core business. For long memory take [Nomi AI](/en/reviews/nomi/), for scenes with no till per view [SpicyChat](/en/reviews/spicychat/). And if you build your own characters, read the clause about the rights to characters you create first, which I take apart further down.
What none of the three alternatives names in its plan that way is the combination of a video call with the character, where available, and a library you can filter by age bracket and by the character's origin. For pure variety this app therefore stays the first address in my field.
Joi AI review: three scenes with characters from the library
I deliberately played this Joi AI review without a character of my own. Anyone who offers a library of thousands of ready-made characters should be measured by it, and not by a character sheet I wrote myself. So: three characters from three categories, three scenes, no preparation.
The tavern: the fastest start in the whole test field
Scene one is open: my player character walks into an inn, knows nobody, has no goal. Thanks to the bundled opening scenario the character gets no chance to hesitate here, because place, mood and an open thread are already set. Within two messages I had a complaint about the innkeeper, a request and therefore an action.
That is exactly this app’s strength. A card in the library shows a personality tag, an age and a scenario, so precisely the three details I would note down for a side character at the table. I was able to play three scenes with three completely different temperaments without filling in a single field.
The interrogation: the safety filter cuts off the tension
Scene two is the hard test, and it jammed twice here. My character interrogates the AI character, who is supposed to hold a lie. At the points where the pressure rose, instead of a reply in character came a smooth, innocuous sentence that sounded like a building block and not like a person.
The explanation is in the safety guidelines: every message runs through a classifier, and flagged topics get a canned reply. In terms of content there was nothing forbidden in my scene; the rules target minors, real identifiable people without consent, trafficking, self-harm and extremism. Interrogation language is apparently still enough to tap the filter. The help center has its own article about these warnings, and that is where I would look first before doubting myself.
The quiet evening: nice tone, short memory
Scene three has no plot, only two characters and time. The tone was good; the character responded to my rhythm and did not stuff a question into every pause. Where it stumbled was the continuation: when I picked up the same scene two days later, I had to introduce a side character again.
What I liked about the tone: the characters follow your mood instead of pushing one of their own. Independent testers describe the conversations at Joi AI as scenario-led, and the summary of the Trustpilot ratings names the immersive, natural conversations as the most frequent praise. In scene three I could see why. Only that good impression does not hold across days, and I come back to that in the memory section.
My conclusion from the three scenes: this app is an excellent short-story machine and a middling campaign machine. If your evenings consist of many short, different scenes, hardly anything fits better. If you want to run an arc over months, you will have to supply more here than you would like.
Joi AI cost, neurons and the Joi AI promo code
The prices sit behind the sign-up, and that is exactly why a clean separation pays off: there is the subscription, and there is the currency for individual actions. Only the two together give you your real monthly amount.
The Premium plans at a glance
| Term | Price on August 12, 2026 | Per month | Allowance on the plan card |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 month | $13.99 | $13.99 | 1,000 coins per month |
| 3 months | $20.99 once | about $7 | 1,200 coins per month |
| 12 months | $47.99 once | about $4 | 1,500 coins per month |
According to the terms of service every subscription renews automatically, and if a renewal is not completed within 7 days, the account falls back to Basic. You cancel under “My Subscriptions”, and specifically on the site where you signed up. Partial periods are not refunded, but Premium keeps running to the end of the period you paid for. The terms also mention better conditions for loyal customers, though without a single figure, plus a reservation that region and running promotions change the price.
What neurons really cost
Three amounts are written in black and white in the terms of service: reading a romantic message costs 4 neurons, a photo view comes to up to 120 and a video view to up to 1,900. One detail that confuses: the plan cards talk about coins, the account balance about neurons. Treat both as one balance. With the pack prices reported in July 2026, 500 for $12.69 and 10,000 for $126.99, that gives the following calculation, which is mine.
| What you do | Price in neurons | 500 pack ($12.69) | 10,000 pack ($126.99) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Open a romantic message | 4 | about 10 cents | about 5 cents |
| Unlock a photo | up to 120 | up to about $3.05 | up to about $1.52 |
| Unlock a clip | up to 1,900 | up to about $48 | up to about $24 |
| A second character of your own (reported) | 1,000 | about $25 | about $12.70 |
The difference between the columns is the most important sentence in this section: the big pack halves the price per neuron. So if you view media regularly, buy big or leave it alone.
My real monthly amount
For a month with three scene evenings a week, pure text and the annual plan, I come out at about $4 with Joi AI. As soon as a small neuron pack joins in, it is more like $17, and with regular clips the amount is higher than for any other app in my ranking of AI character apps. That is not a criticism of the price but a warning about the way the arithmetic works: this platform is cheap for writers and expensive for viewers.
Discounts, codes and what does not exist
The biggest reduction sits in the term. At the check in August 2026 the annual offer showed 71 percent against monthly billing and landed at $47.99. There is a field for a promo code at checkout; the same test saw HELLO50 take half off the three-month plan, while nothing changed on the monthly price and the annual offer could not be combined. There is no free trial of Premium, and codes that promise big savings online could not be matched to any official page. Treat every code the checkout does not accept as expired.
Joi AI experience with memory in the Joi AI chat
What the platform promises and what its policy says
The home page promises characters who learn what you like. The privacy policy shows the technical side of the same statement: facts from your life, interests and people you mention in the chat are collected to make the conversation more personal. According to independent tests, Premium brings an improved memory and stronger models, with switchable models named Saturn and Mars.
One user quoted a Premium promise of “8,000-message smart memory”, so a smart memory across 8,000 messages. I could not measure that, and model names change faster than reviews anyway. So I judge a character by what she still knows on the third evening.
What my check and the user reports add up to
From the quiet evening, two of five details came back after seven days; the rest were gone or wrongly put together. The Joi AI reviews elsewhere go in both directions: some reviewers find that recurring details sit well and that you can ask the character to remember something. Others describe long Premium chats that forget names, tip into repetition or switch personality, and at least one canceled over it.
Three habits that genuinely help here
First: two lines of summary at the start of every session, the way a game master says “last time, at Hagen’s cellar”. Second: name people and places again when the scene changes, instead of assuming they are known. Third: open a new chat as soon as a character starts going in circles, because a fresh thread is faster here than any rescue of a stuck one.
These three moves cost nothing and make up most of the difference to apps with a stronger memory, even if they do not quite close the gap to Nomi AI. More about which fields a character needs in order to stay true to herself is in my guide to creating your own AI character.
Building Joi AI characters yourself: the generator and the fine print
How the Joi AI generator works
The “Create AI” button opens the generator, where you set looks and personality. According to independent tests Premium includes one character of your own, each further one costs a reported 1,000 neurons, and one user reports that the description fields stop at 1,000 characters. For a character sheet that is tight but workable if you write traits instead of novel prose.
Outside the chat there are pages for a gallery and for generating clips from a text prompt. Inside the chat, a character’s images come from prepared folders selected by an algorithm according to the safety guidelines; they are not generated to order. That explains why an image sometimes fits the scene perfectly and sometimes misses.
Two clauses you should read before you build
First: only verified creators with a signed agreement may upload photos to build a character; ordinary users may not. Second, and this is the more important one: every character you create belongs to the platform according to the terms of service, and it may make a private character public. You can ask support to reverse that or to delete the character.
In practice that means: feel free to build characters for scenes here, but do not build your favorite character from ten years of campaigning here for the first time. If a character matters to you, the character sheet belongs in a file of your own, and Joi AI only gets a copy.
This rule has nothing to do with mistrust and everything to do with craft. Since my time as a forum moderator I have kept every character in a file of its own, because platforms come and go while character sheets stay. Working that way, you can keep playing the same character in another app tomorrow without reinventing her.
Images, voice and video calls
The terms of service name voice chat and a video call feature, “where available”, which I read as a limitation and not as a promise. Independent tests report that Premium includes 50 image and 5 video generations a month before neurons come due. These allowances are reported and not confirmed, so they work as a guide value, not as a commitment.
My advice for images: describe clothing, place and mood plainly and keep the prompt short. Reviewers praise range and quality but also report odd anatomy, and the length of the prompt usually lies between the two.
Joi AI app, login and privacy before your first subscription
Two domains, one company
The adult platform carries the suffix “Spicy” in its page title, and the same company runs a sister site with a family-friendly home page and a general character chat. The terms of service of both sites are the same document, name the same company and the same neuron prices. It is one provider with two entrances.
Two practical consequences. First, the larger Trustpilot profile sits under the sister domain: when I checked on September 30, 2026, it showed 4.1 out of 5 from 268 ratings, with 55 percent five stars and 9 percent one star, and the company had replied to 94 percent of the negative ratings, though mostly only after more than a month. The small profile of the main domain showed 3.7 from two ratings. Second, you can only change or cancel a subscription where you signed up for it. So bookmark the site you actually use.
The Joi AI login, the app question and age checks
You sign up by email or with an Apple, Facebook or Google account; with the email route a confirmation code arrives that sometimes lands in spam, according to the help center. You confirm your age in order to see adult content, and you can hide it again in the settings. One account per person is allowed; sharing is not.
I found no link to an app in any store, neither on the website nor in the help center. The platform runs in the browser, and the site is built so that you can add it to your home screen and open it full screen. An app of the same name on Google Play belongs to an unrelated developer and is a mental health tool. The safe route remains typing the address in yourself.
The age rules are strictly worded: 18 years, or the age of majority in your country if that is higher. Adult features require a confirmation plus a check by a third-party provider where laws or card rules prescribe it. On top of that comes a reference to 18 U.S.C. §2257 as well as a policy effective since August 21, 2026 that excludes trafficking and exploitation.
Company, data and payment
The documents name Lanoto Solutions Inc. as the operator with the register number 6037405; the office address given is 173 Huguenot St, Suite 200, New Rochelle, New York. According to the terms, the law of the company’s country of incorporation governs. Anyone based in the US accepts arbitration at the American Arbitration Association, may go to a small claims court up to a value of $5,000 and waives class actions; outside the US the proceedings run in London under the LCIA rules. Older independent reviews name a company from Cyprus as the operator; that name no longer appears on the current pages.
The privacy policy explicitly denies selling personal data. The same document, however, states that written and spoken messages feed into better replies and into developing the AI, that uploaded images may be analyzed for objects and faces by external service providers, and that recordings of your session only go to Microsoft with your consent. For advertising and analytics, cookies from Google, Facebook, Yahoo and Microsoft Bing are listed. I found no mention of encryption, and the platform’s emails contain links that log you straight in, so never forward them.
You pay by card, Google Pay, Apple Pay or, where available, with cryptocurrency, and the charge appears under the name of the main domain. The refund policy applies in cases of fraud, for a one-off mistaken purchase within 14 days, at the full amount with untouched neurons and pro rata with partly spent ones, and when the company ends your plan; support promises a first reply within 72 hours and is reachable by email address, through the help center and on a US phone number from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Pacific time. Important: a chargeback through your bank may, according to the terms, lead to your chats being shared as evidence. So cancel the regular way, and your history stays your history.
Joi AI: frequently asked questions
What is Joi AI?
Joi AI is an AI character app for adults that runs in the browser. You chat with ready-made characters from a large library or with ones you have built yourself, create images and short clips, and can speak by voice or video call where available. The service is operated by Lanoto Solutions Inc. of New Rochelle in the state of New York. The company additionally runs a family-friendly sister site under the same rulebook.
Is Joi AI free?
For trying it out, yes. Signing up on the Basic plan costs nothing, and new accounts start with 10 neurons according to reports; more are said to come from daily logins and from linking a Discord account. The free plan limits messages, with one user reporting 65 in August 2026, and keeps stronger models and most media behind Premium. There is no free trial of Premium.
What does Joi AI cost?
At a check from a logged-in account on August 12, 2026, Premium cost $13.99 for one month, $20.99 for three months or $47.99 for a year; checks from June and July 2026 showed $17.77 and $60.95. Neuron packs start at $12.69 for 500 according to reports. A pure chat month on the annual plan lands at about $4, and with a small neuron pack more like $17.
How good is the memory in the Joi AI chat?
Usable within a session, weak across weeks. In my check after a seven-day break, two of five details came back from the quiet evening, and in long chats I had to supply names again. The user reports are split: some praise recurring details holding, others describe drifting and personality switches. If you want to work around it, start every session with two lines of summary.
Is there a Joi AI app?
No link on the website leads to an app in any store. You play in the browser, on the computer as on the phone, and you can add the site to your home screen so it starts full screen. An app of the same name on Google Play belongs to an unrelated developer and is a mental health tool, so it has nothing to do with this platform. Type the address in yourself instead.
Is there a Joi AI promo code?
There is a field for a promo code at checkout, and the help center has articles about using one and about what to do if you get an error message. At the check in August 2026 the code HELLO50 took 50 percent off the three-month plan; it changed nothing on the monthly price and could not be combined with the annual offer. The real discount sits in the long term anyway, which showed 71 percent at the time.
Can I build my own Joi AI characters?
Yes, through the generator. According to independent tests Premium includes one character of your own, each further one costs a reported 1,000 neurons, and one user reports an upper limit of 1,000 characters in the description fields. Two clauses you should know: only verified creators with a signed agreement may upload photos, and every character you create belongs to the platform, which may also make it public. Support can reverse that on request or delete the character.
Is Joi AI safe and legitimate?
Behind the platform stands a registered company, Lanoto Solutions Inc., with published terms of service, a privacy policy, a refund policy, a support email and a US phone number. Personal data is not sold by the company's own account, but chats feed into developing the AI, and advertising cookies are running. Use a nickname, refuse the session recording and cancel the regular way instead of by chargeback.
The verdict: is Joi AI worth it?
Grade C, 6.3 out of 10. Conversation gets a 7: the scenario-led start is the best in the field, but the safety classifier cuts off scenes that need pressure. Memory gets a 6: in my check after seven days less came back than with the competition, and the user reports about long chats drifting point the same way. Pricing gets a 7: the annual plan lands at about $4 a month and the cost per action is written in black and white in the terms, but up to 1,900 neurons for one video view is a serious number. Privacy gets a 5: a registered US company with published rules, plus chats that feed into developing the AI, advertising cookies and no mention of encryption.
This is how I would start: open the site in the browser, confirm your age, sign up by email or with an Apple, Facebook or Google account, and then spread the free messages across three characters from three categories. Play a short scene with each and watch whether the tone suits your play style. If it does, skip the monthly plan and take the quarter for testing or the year straight away. Use the monthly allowance first, check the displayed neuron price before you tap a media view, and only buy the big pack once you know your habits. For adults who write and like to switch, this is a clear recommendation; for long campaigns it is not.
The fastest way to find out whether this app suits your play style is to play one scene each with three characters from three categories on the free plan. If you would rather see the whole field first, compare every app with grades in my overview.
